How to Use Exit Tickets for Real-Time Formative Assessment

You have just spent fifty minutes delivering a lesson on linear equations. You feel like it went well, but how do you know if your students actually understood the material? You cannot wait until the unit test next Friday to find out.

Exit tickets are one of the most efficient tools for gathering real-time formative assessment data. They are brief, low-stakes questions completed by students during the last five minutes of class.

Designing Effective Exit Tickets

1. Keep it Short An exit ticket should contain no more than 1 to 3 questions. It should take students less than three minutes to complete.

2. Align to the Lesson Goal Focus the prompt directly on the day's objective. If the goal was to write an algebraic equation from a scenario, the exit ticket should ask students to do exactly that.

3. Target Common Errors Write prompts that are likely to reveal misconceptions. For example, if teaching punctuation, ask students to correct a comma splice.

4. Streamline Collection You can use paper slips or digital forms. By using an online quiz maker, you can instantly generate review data and see a visual summary of which students need extra support before the next class starts.

Using exit tickets daily ensures that you never move on to new content while leaving struggling students behind.
